Edward grew up in the estate of Sir Robert Hastings in West Sussex, his father was the game warden.

At 12 years old, in the Spring of 1869, Edward investigated a series of disappearances and tracked the source to the return of Hastings' son who had returned from France afflicted with Lycanthropy. Grey was bitten but Hastings ensured that he would be healed, and through the doctors and priests he recovered.
